I love cruise ship fruit art. It is a curious art form that pops up in the buffets and restaurants of certain ships. I imagine the chefs in the galley whiling away their long contracts whittling a watermelon whilst they think of their families far away.
I have always assumed fruit art is a folk art tradition passed down from experienced chef to new recruit. Just like the scrimshaw created on whale bones and teeth by old timey sailors. Some pieces are more successful than others but all bring me pleasure. I like to spot aubergine penguins and apple ducks lurking amongst sushi. Or melon vikings pillaging the buffet.
Here are some examples of fruit art I have seen whilst cruising. You can find more examples on Instagram @cruisearama or share your own using the hashtag #fruitartfriday.
